17 & 18 October 2026

On your marks,
get set, woof!

Munich’s 4th DackelRace is ready to go!

In 2026 it’s time again: off the lead and onto the paws – the dachshunds are off! The fast-paced race is run over a 40-metre track, also known as “1 dachshund mile”.

A total of 120 dachshunds can take part in different weight classes. The races take place on Saturday and Sunday.

For safety reasons, the dachshunds race according to weight class – not by size variety such as rabbit, miniature, standard or American miniature dachshund.

Day 1 Saturday 17.10.26

Up to 5 kg
Up to 7.9 kg
DackelMix

Day 2 Sunday 18.10.26

8 kg and above

How it works

  1. Apply here via the website.
  2. Accepted teams receive an invoice for €60. It includes participation with a goodie bag and 2 day tickets for the two-legged team members on race day. Participation is only confirmed once payment has been received. If the payment deadline (14 days after the invoice is sent) is missed, the place automatically goes to the next dachshund on the waiting list for that class.
  3. The waiting list remains active until all places have been filled.

On race day

At check-in a vet carries out a check, including the vaccination status. The dachshunds are weighed to avoid major differences from the weight given at registration.
Please keep this in mind when you register and check the vaccination status. Without a rabies vaccination, participation is not possible (German Animal Disease Act).

At check-in, every dachshund receives a chip (€70 cash deposit), which must be worn in a neckerchief during the race. The neckerchief is a gift for every participant. Once the chip is returned, the deposit is refunded.

Fair play & safety – the rules

Teams may cheer their dog on at the finish, call it or tempt it with toys –
but please do not:

  • use strong-smelling lures such as sausages, liver sausage or similar.
A treat or biscuit at the finish is fine.
    • tempt them with heavy or large toys that are bigger than the dog.
    • Do not use loud horns, vuvuzelas, megaphones or other noisemakers. Whistles commonly used in dog training are fine.
  • Please don’t “throw” the dachshunds over the start line – let them stand on the ground until the start signal sounds.
  • The run is over as soon as the dachshund with the chip in its neckerchief crosses the finish line.
  • The safety and well-being of the dogs come first – no force, no pushing, no shoving – those who don’t feel like running can still be proud!
  • The race management may exclude teams that break the rules or animal welfare standards, or if a dog shows signs of social stress.
  • A bump, like those that happen during free play in a dog park, does not lead to exclusion or a re-run. Always remember: despite everything, this is not a sporting competition.
  • Unfortunately, females in heat cannot take part.
  • Entry fees already paid cannot be refunded if the participant is unable to attend.
  • Participation in the DackelRace is at your own risk. By registering, owners confirm that their dachshund is suitable for participation in terms of health, physical condition and temperament, and they are responsible for the risks typically associated with their dog’s participation. The organiser’s liability for intent and gross negligence remains unaffected.

Dachshunds and responsibility

We love dachshunds: their stubbornness, their courage and their unmistakable charm. That is exactly why we feel responsible for addressing a serious topic too. Some dachshunds carry so-called torture breeding traits. These are bred-in characteristics that can cause the dog pain, suffering or harm:

  • Short legs and a long back (chondrodystrophy): The typical dachshund build comes with an increased risk of slipped discs, known as “dachshund paralysis”.
  • Merle colouring (“dapple dachshund”): If two merle carriers are bred together, the puppies may be born deaf or blind. This is why such breeding is banned in Germany.
  • Colour dilution (e.g. blue, isabella): This can lead to skin and coat problems, and even hair loss.
  • Extreme miniature forms: The smaller and more delicate the breeding, the more vulnerable the body can become.

Before you decide on a dachshund, please remember: this breed has special needs. These include back-friendly habits in everyday life (e.g. stairs, jumping off the sofa), a healthy weight and a watchful eye for the first signs of discomfort.

Get advice on how to recognise a reputable breeder, for example from the Deutscher Teckelklub (DTK, the German dachshund club) or your vet. And please don’t buy puppies from puppy farms abroad or via anonymous online ads. A low price often hides great animal suffering, and new owners frequently face high vet bills.

And maybe it doesn’t have to be a puppy: many dogs, including dachshunds and dachshund mixes, are waiting in animal shelters for people who will give them a loving home and a true partnership.

A healthy dachshund is the most beautiful dachshund.
